Yep, I was one of the kids who went out with friends and painted a hydrant like George Washington in Irving TX. We gave him big round cartoonish crossed eyes. His photo made the local newspaper! (I’ll have to look for the clipping when I visit my dad’s house!)
Both my brother and I painted fire hydrants in Downers Grove IL for the Bicentennial. His I believe was George Washington but not totally sure. We no longer have the photo. I thought mine was of an Indian because I faintly recall the hair braids. My chosen figure was outside of the gray box of Revolutionary figures. Perhaps I did a soldier, perhaps it was my brother’s.
I didn’t paint any of them but took so many pictures. I don’t know what happened to those pictures, but I have to find them and post them online. Of course, in those days all we had were cameras and film.

I loved these as a kid! I didn’t know they were genuine folk art.
I was just telling my kids about this last night! We had an Uncle Sam and a Betsy Ross in out neighborhood!
